Firstly, it’s great that you’ve got a love to write for, not an ‘ex’ to write about, so it’ll be a positive song. There are a few different approaches that you could try. Success depends largely on how you tick, whether you’ve got talent in that field, and how much effort you put into it.

Are you a maths type of guy, or good with words? Or are you more practical and good at building things? One way is to ‘brainstorm’ on paper all of the awesome things about her, then see if they fit into a rhyme, poem or cool-sounding sentence. Another way is to take a walk along the beach and whistle or hum and see what comes out. One of my mates tells me my lyrics are better than my melodies, so we have written some songs together. Maybe you could even write the song together if it’s about the two of you.

Another tip: sus out a rift on the gat that you like (or one that she likes) and just ‘oh – ah’ to it, just sing ‘la-la’ and stuff. That way you start to get some melody. If you’re thinking about ‘your love’ you might find that the words just start flowing. All the best, bro’, and one more thing: avoid trying to write a hit for the world; just keep it as your special song and write another one to get famous. That way, if you do make it big, you’ll still have a private life!

Pretty simple, actually. Come up with a 4 chord progression that sets the tone for the verses. You want to avoid too many minor chords, but need at least one to pull on the heart-strings a bit. You want it to sound sweet and light, but confident. So, pick 4 chords and play them together. Come up with a melody. No words yet. Just a melody that sounds how you feel about her. Really get deep on it. Close your eyes and almost meditatively find the tune that feels right and could make you cry. Do the same for a chorus. Find 2 to 4 chords in the same key and find a melody. Don’t be self conscious. Let it take you over. Once you’ve got a melody, you can now plug words into the syllables you’ve created. Try not to use cliche love song words like “baby” and “girl” or phrases like “my heart” and “lovin’ you”. Keep it original and personal so when she hears your song, she knows it can only be about you and her. Think about the in between moments and the thoughts that get you all choked up when you think about her. The more willing to expose your honest feelings in this song, the more she will subconsciously feel it when she listens. Music is a powerful thing, and when it’s honest, it’s special on another level. Whatever you write, DO NOT censor it! Being scared to candidly express how you feel will keep you from writing a good song.
